Patek Phillipe’s Gondolo collection was born from its inspiration in Art Deco and specifically offers less common case shapes one would regularly see on any Patek timepiece. Originally launched in 1993, the name of this collection was derived from the “Chronometro Gondolo” watches manufactured for the renowned Brazilian retailer – Gondol & Labouriau, in Rio de Janeiro between 1902 and 1930.

This particular reference 5200G Gondolo 8 Days was initially introduced in 2013. Many collectors have argued that it possesses all the hallmarks of becoming a future classic whilst incorporating Patek’s technological innovations from the ‘Patek Phillipe Advanced Research” program, and it's not hard to see why.

In our opinion, I think many seasoned collectors would agree with us that the 5200 is a purist’s watch. It features a beautifully finished manually-wound 8-day calendar movement. This movement is not only beautiful to look at but incredibly impressive mechanically. Incorporating Patek’s latest tech from the Advanced Research Program, the movement caliber utilizes twin in-line barrels that contribute to the 5200G’s ability to store power for 192 hours (hence, 8 days of power reserve). It also features Patek’s proprietary Spiromax balance spring and Pulsomax escapement which are both silicon-based materials and contribute to the reduction of friction. As a result, the watch essentially does not require any lubrication.

The dial on this one is just as beautiful as the movement. You will find an 8-day power reserve indicator at the top portion of the dial and the day/date indications at the lower. It features faceted Dauphine-style white-gold hour markers which are also mirror polished. The date hand (which has a red tip), sub-seconds hand as well, and the hand for the power reserve indicator are all finished in white lacquer to serve as a contrast to the blue dial.

What makes this particular example even more special is that it remains unused and double-sealed from when it was bought in 2015. Patek Philippe used to sell watches sealed but now, all watches have to be opened in-store and fitted to the buyer which makes seeing a double-sealed example incredibly rare and special.

An absolutely stunning watch from a brand within the Holy Trinity and one that is definitely not talked about enough. The 5200G is a remarkable example of how a watch can take inspiration from art deco elements and yet, look so contemporary at the same time.
